DSL Internet Providers Offer A Fast, Secure Option

Living with a dial-up Internet service can be very frustrating. Some people even do the laundry or the dishes while they are waiting for things to download with their dial up service. Instead of living life in the slow lane, it may be worth taking the next step up to DSL Internet providers. There are several advantages to taking this step and finding a DSL Internet provider.
First, what is a DSL Internet provider? This broadband Internet provider is a digital subscriber line. It connects a person's computer to the Internet through existing copper phone lines in an area. DSL technology can download from 768 Kbps up to about 7.1 Mbps depending on the plan. It is about 50 times faster than dial up Internet connections. However, it is slower than cable.

In addition to the speed of DSL Internet providers, there are other advantages to using this service. One of those advantages is that a person does not have to tie up his or her phone line when the Internet is in use. DSL will not cause others to get frustrated when they call a house or business and get a busy signal. This connection is digital so it does not prevent a person from talking on the phone.

Another advantage of using a DSL Internet provider is that the Internet is always on as long as a person's or business's computer is running. Logging on to the Internet can sometimes seem like it takes forever with a dial up service. However, with DSL Internet providers, the wait time is only as long as it takes the computer to boot up.

DSL is also a secure method of getting on the Internet. With this service, a subscriber gets his or her own personal line. Even cable Internet connections do not match the security of DSL Internet providers. With cable broadband Internet providers, a person is sharing his or her connection with others in the area. This runs the risk of others seeing private information such as financial information and business records.

The most important concern for many Internet subscribers is the cost of their plans. Two of the top DSL Internet service providers are AT&T and Verizon. Each of these companies offers starting DSL plans for about $20. They also offer faster plans that increase in price. There are many other companies that offer DSL and it is recommended to research different prices and plans before making any decisions about home or business Internet usage.

A disadvantage of DSL Internet providers is that they are distance sensitive. DSL originates from a central location and the further away that a home or business gets away from that central location, the more frequently this home or business will lose its connection. There can sometimes be heavy traffic on DSL connections as well. Heavy traffic will slow down the connection.

A DSL Internet provider is only one of many options out there for those people looking for a broadband Internet provider. Some people may be more interested in a cable or satellite connection. In most cases, the choice depends on the reason a person needs Internet service. A person who works from home or at a business would likely need a different service than someone who just likes to send a few emails.
